Common Mistakes to Avoid
Forgetting to convert the percentage to a decimal
Fix: A 10% rate must be divided by 100 to become 0.10 before multiplying. Multiplying by 10 directly would give a result 100 times too large.
Not clarifying whether the rate is on gross or net sales
Fix: Some commission plans pay on gross sales, others on net sales after returns. Confirm which base applies before calculating expected earnings.
Overlooking tiered or graduated commission structures
Fix: Many plans increase the rate as you hit thresholds. A flat-rate calculator is for simple plans; tiered plans need to be calculated per bracket.
