Real-World Examples
Solving for an unknown
Solve 2x + 3 = 11.
x = 4
Negative coefficient
Solve -3x + 5 = 20.
x = -5
Fractional result
Solve 4x + 1 = 10.
x = 2.25
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Dividing before isolating the x term
Fix: First move the constant to the other side (subtract b), then divide by a. Dividing too early mixes constants and coefficients.
Forgetting to flip the sign when moving terms
Fix: When you move a term to the other side of the equation, its sign flips. +b becomes −b and vice versa.
Dividing by zero when a is 0
Fix: If a is 0, the equation is not linear. Check for no solution (b ≠ c) or infinitely many solutions (b = c).
