Common Mistakes to Avoid
Confusing markup with profit margin
Fix: Markup is calculated on cost: ((Price - Cost) / Cost) × 100. Profit margin is calculated on selling price: ((Price - Cost) / Price) × 100. The same transaction gives different percentages for each.
Dividing by the selling price instead of the cost
Fix: Markup is always relative to cost. Dividing by the selling price gives you the profit margin, not the markup.
Adding the markup percentage to the cost to verify the price incorrectly
Fix: To verify, multiply cost by (1 + markup/100). For a 50% markup on a $40 cost, the price is $40 × 1.50 = $60, not $40 + $50.
