Common Mistakes to Avoid
Confusing percentage difference with percentage change
Fix: Percentage change uses one value as the base and is directional. Percentage difference uses the average as the base and is symmetric — swapping the inputs does not change the result.
Dividing by one of the values instead of the average
Fix: The denominator must be (V1 + V2) / 2. Dividing by V1 or V2 alone turns this into a percentage change calculation.
Forgetting the absolute value in the numerator
Fix: Use |V1 - V2| so the difference is always positive. The sign carries no meaning in a non-directional comparison.
