Required for females only
Real-World Examples
Male, 70 in, neck 15 in, waist 34 in
Body fat: ~18.6% (Fitness)
Female, 65 in, neck 13 in, waist 28 in, hip 38 in
Body fat: ~22.5% (Fitness)
Male, 72 in, neck 16 in, waist 30 in
Body fat: ~10.2% (Athletic)
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Measuring the waist at the wrong point
Fix: For the Navy method, measure the waist at the navel (men) or the natural waistline (women), not at the belt line. Inconsistent measurement points cause large swings in the result.
Forgetting the hip measurement for females
Fix: The female Navy formula requires hip circumference. Omitting it or entering zero produces a meaningless result. Leave the hip field blank only if the subject is male.
Treating the estimate as exact
Fix: The Navy method can be off by 3–5% compared to DEXA scans. Use it to track trends over time rather than as a precise body fat value.
