Common Mistakes to Avoid
Treating ideal weight as a strict target
Fix: The Devine formula gives a statistical estimate for a medium frame. People with large frames or high muscle mass may be healthy above it, and small frames below it. Use it as a rough guide, not a goal you must hit exactly.
Using ideal weight for drug dosing without context
Fix: The Devine formula was created for medication dosing. For obese patients, dosing often uses adjusted or lean body weight instead of ideal weight to avoid under- or over-dosing. Consult clinical guidelines for dosing decisions.
Ignoring frame size
Fix: A person with a large frame can carry 10% more weight healthily, while a small frame may be best 10% below. Measure wrist circumference or elbow breadth to estimate frame size and adjust the target accordingly.
